Sistiana suits couples and small families who want a wide pebble bay on the Gulf of Trieste, with a cliff path to Duino Castle. Homes sleep four to six, so check each listing for pool and air conditioning details. It is a small seaside village, so evenings are quiet.
Sistiana, Sesljan in Slovene, is a seaside village in the scattered municipality of Duino-Aurisina, just under 20 km from Trieste. The village sits on the first spurs of the Karst plateau, and below it Sistiana Mare is a wide bay with a small harbour ringed by dense woodland. The beach is a broad strip of small pebbles that suits children, with green, clear water. Two sailing clubs are based in the bay, one of them among Italy's oldest. Our homes are grouped together near the village. Evenings are low-key, and Trieste is the place for a bigger night out. Check each listing for pool details.
A footpath of about 2.5 km along the Duino Cliffs reserve, linking Sistiana with Duino and named after the poet Rilke.
A 14th-century castle at the end of the Rilke path, open to visitors every day from March to the end of October.
Trieste Airport is about 17 minutes by car from Sistiana. Without a car, an hourly bus takes around half an hour, and a few direct trains a day take about 14 minutes. A car still helps for the Karst villages and Trieste.
Pebble. The main beach in Sistiana bay is a wide strip of small pebbles, suitable for children, with clear green water a short walk from Duino Castle.
About 2.5 km. The Sentiero Rilke follows the top of the Duino Cliffs nature reserve, with white limestone and Mediterranean scrub, and ends at Duino Castle.
Just under 20 km. Trieste, the provincial capital, lies south-east of the village, close enough for an evening in the city, and Trieste Airport is about 17 minutes away by car.
