Rio Marina suits visitors who want Elba's mining past on the island's east coast, with the Piombino ferry about 45 minutes away. Homes here are mostly for around five, and under half have a pool.
Rio Marina is a small fishing and mining village in an inlet on the eastern side of Elba, dating back to Etruscan times. Iron mining scarred the land around it, and the Mining Museum in Palazzo del Burò, in the village centre, is the start of the Island of Elba Mineral Park, an open-air site you can tour on foot, by bike or on a small train. In the Conche area there is a small red lake with purplish reflections. The village also has a 16th-century clock tower and the church of San Rocco. Most homes have a garden and some have a pool. The village is well connected to the mainland all year.
Where the Shining Coast stretch that starts at Rio Marina ends, and a ferry stop on the Piombino route.

The island's largest town, with a fortified city built by Cosimo I de' Medici in 1548.
Ferries cross from Piombino on the mainland. Toremar's crossing to Rio Marina takes about 45 minutes, and boats also serve Portoferraio and Cavo. Elba has its own small airport, La Pila, in Campo nell'Elba. A car is useful for getting round the island.
Rio Marina is popular with holidaymakers, especially in summer, and its ferry link to the mainland runs year-round. Guided walking and hiking events on the island take place in spring and autumn. Check the Mining Park and museum opening times before an off-season visit.
