Centola suits families and swimmers who want Palinuro's beaches and the sea caves of its cape close by. About half our homes here have a pool, and all have air conditioning. It is a long way south: allow nearly three hours from Naples airport.
Centola is a comune in southern Cilento made up of the hill town itself, at about 336 metres, and four hamlets. Palinuro, the largest, lies by the sea about 7 km from Centola at the mouths of the Lambro and Mingardo rivers, and is the comune's port. Foria lies close to Centola, and San Severino, with its medieval ruins, is near the railway station. Our homes are grouped within about 2 km of each other, in the countryside between the hill town and the coast, so you drive down to the beach. They mostly sleep four to six. Tourism peaks in summer, and Palinuro lies inside the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park.
A five-fingered headland with 32 caves above and below the water, including the Grotta Azzurra, and a lighthouse.
One of the cape's best-known beaches, used as a film location for Jason and the Argonauts and Clash of the Titans.
Village about 10 km from Palinuro that gives its name to Pisciotta-Palinuro station on the Naples to Reggio Calabria line.
Naples airport is about 165 km away, close to three hours by car. Trains on the Naples to Reggio Calabria line stop at Pisciotta-Palinuro, 8 km north of Palinuro, with buses on to the town. A car is needed for homes in the hills.
Tourism in Palinuro peaks in summer, and July and August are the hottest months, so book early for those weeks. Most of the year's rain falls in autumn and winter, which makes late spring the drier choice outside high season.
Yes. Palinuro is the most populated hamlet of the comune of Centola and its port, about 7 km from the hill town. Homes listed under Centola may be closer to the coast than the name suggests, so check each map.
Yes. The caves of Cape Palinuro, beside Centola's seaside hamlet, are popular, especially with divers, and the Grotta Azzurra is the best known of 32, with two underwater entrances. Baia Buondormire, the Bay of Good Sleep, can only be reached by boat.
The Dune, Arco Naturale, Marinella and Mingardo beaches around Palinuro are the ones to know. Palinuro has repeatedly been awarded the Blue Flag, and the Arco Naturale beach has appeared in films including Clash of the Titans.
Pisciotta-Palinuro station, 8 km north of Palinuro on the Naples to Reggio Calabria line, serves the area, and regular buses link it to the town. Hydrofoils also connect Palinuro with Salerno and Naples.
