Kolympia, also written Kolymbia, is a small resort on Rhodes' east coast, roughly halfway between Rhodes town and Lindos. Homes here mostly have a private pool and sleep a family or two, with the sea a short drive away. The beaches are mixed sand and pebble, not wide empty sand.
Kolympia is a tourist village on the east coast, about 25 km from Rhodes town, in the middle of the road between the town and Lindos. The east side has almost continuous sandy beaches with calm water. The village itself is modest: the roads to the hotels branch off a eucalyptus avenue, which is where summer evenings happen, and the beach to the south is a mix of sand and pebbles where water shoes are advised. The homes are spread over a few kilometres around the village, nearly all with a private pool and air conditioning, and typically three bedrooms. Kolympia effectively shuts in winter, so out of season expect to drive to Rhodes town or Lindos for an evening out.
A natural bay of about 2 km between Kolympia and Archangelos, with the monastery on the steep slope to its north.
Epta Piges, about 7 km from Kolympia, with a short forest trail, a narrow tunnel to a small reservoir and cool shade in summer.
The next village, about 5 km north; the Afandou to Kolymbia beach on the Bay of Afandou runs just north of Kolympia.
A village below an important ancient acropolis, with its town beach on the bay, further south along the same main road.
Rhodes' party resort to the north, with a long sandy beach and plenty of tavernas, reached on the local bus line.
Rhodes Diagoras airport is on the west coast, about 14 km from Rhodes town, and Kolympia is around 25 km from the town on the east side. You will want a hire car: the villas are outside the village and all public bus lines radiate from Rhodes town.
Rhodes is typically sunny and mild, with 300 or more sun days a year, and the east coast is the calm side because the wind mostly comes from the west. Summer is when the eucalyptus avenue is busy at night. Kolympia effectively shuts in winter, and in summer the shade at Epta Piges is a welcome break from the sun.
Yes. Kolymbia is the common transliteration of the same village on Rhodes' east coast, which had been called San Benedetto and was renamed Kolymbia in 1961.
Partly. The beach on the south side of the village is a mix of sand and pebbles, and water shoes are advised. Tsambika bay, a natural bay about 2 km long, is around 4 km away.
It is lively in summer, when evenings centre on the eucalyptus avenue. Out of season the village effectively closes, with very little open in winter.
Kolympia is the calmer base. Faliraki is the island's party resort, with a long sandy beach and plenty of tavernas, and you can reach it from Kolympia on the local bus.
About 25 km, and Lindos is about the same distance the other way along the main road. Buses run several times a day to both Rhodes town and Lindos.
