Aghios Mattheos is a hill village in south-west Corfu, close to Gardiki Castle and the Korission Lagoon. Most homes here have a private pool and air conditioning, and they mostly sleep two to four. You need a car, as buses to Corfu Town run only a few times a day.
Aghios Mattheos sits above Gardiki Castle, a 13th-century Byzantine fortress with an octagonal wall and eight square towers, described as the only surviving medieval fortress in the south of Corfu. Korission Lake lies just south of the castle, separated from the sea by a narrow strip of land. The village is in the south-west, near Chalikounas beach. Olive and cypress trees cover much of the island, and the homes here are spread over several kilometres of that countryside rather than gathered in one place. Evenings are quiet, and winters are mild, with most of the year's rain.

The island's main hub, with the airport. Its Venetian-influenced old town has been a World Heritage site since 2007.
Fly into Corfu airport, around 20 minutes away by road. Buses to Corfu Town run three times a day and take about an hour, so hire a car, ideally a small one: many island roads are narrow and some have poor surfaces.
Summer is warm and fairly dry, with rain rarely getting in the way. Winters are mild, and most rain falls between November and March. Easter is a big occasion on the island, and autumn brings the grape harvest. Check the opening dates of seasonal tavernas outside summer.

Yes. The castle stands on a low hill by the village and is open to the public. Its eight square towers still stand at full height and the entrance survives, but the interior is in ruins.

Most do, and all have a garden and nearly all have air conditioning. They are mostly for around four people, with a few that sleep up to eight.
