Nea Skioni suits couples and small families who want a quiet Kassandra village away from the busy east-coast resorts. Homes here are small, mostly one bedroom and sleeping up to four, all with air conditioning and a garden. None has a pool, so swimming means the sea.
Nea Skioni is a village of around 700 people on the Kassandra peninsula, 7 km south-west of Chaniotis and about 90 km from Thessaloniki. It began in 1918 as a cluster of fishermen's huts, and it takes its name from ancient Scione, whose site lies just to the east. Thucydides said Scione was founded by settlers from Pellene in the Peloponnese on their way home from Troy. It lies away from the eastern strip between Kallithea and Pefkochori, which became heavily built up with resorts once tourism took off, and that is the point of staying here. All of our homes are in the village itself, close together. Evenings are low-key; for clubs, Kallithea is the place.
A town 7 km to the north-east on Kassandra's north-eastern coast, with Pefkochori 3 km further on.
A very touristy resort on the east coast with seaside restaurants, plenty of shops and a long beach that is flat and easy to reach.
The seat of the Kassandra municipality, built on the site of ancient Potidaea, with a weekly market every Tuesday.
The ancient cut that makes Kassandra an island; the peninsula is so narrow here that you see both coasts from the road over the canal.
Fly to Thessaloniki, about 98 km away and roughly an hour and a half by car, crossing onto Kassandra at the Potidea canal. KTEL Chalkidikis buses run from Thessaloniki twice a day in about two hours, but hire a car: the best beaches need one.
Early and late season are the best times to come. In July and August, summer weekends bring crowds of bathers from Thessaloniki, traffic on the peninsula builds and parking at the popular beaches gets hard, so plan beach trips for weekdays. Nea Skioni itself stays calmer than the east coast.
Yes, compared with the rest of Kassandra. The heavily built-up resorts run along the east coast from Kallithea to Pefkochori, while Nea Skioni, a coastal village of around 700 residents, lies away from that strip, 7 km south-west of Chaniotis.
About 98 km, or roughly an hour and a half by car. The route crosses the Potidea canal onto Kassandra. KTEL Chalkidikis buses from Thessaloniki take about two hours and run only twice a day.
Pick Pefkochori if you want shops, seaside restaurants and a long, flat beach on the doorstep. Nea Skioni is smaller and calmer, and our homes there sleep no more than four, which suits a couple with one or two children.
Some. The village is named after ancient Scione, whose site lies to the east; Thucydides records that it was founded by men from Pellene returning from the Trojan War. The Church of Panagia Faneromeni stands south of the village.
Less than the east coast, but Kassandra as a whole fills up. Summer weekends bring day-trippers from Thessaloniki, traffic builds and parking at the popular beaches is difficult, so go to the beach on weekdays.
