Schliersee is a small Bavarian town on its own lake, 53 km from Munich, with trains running out from the capital. The homes listed under Fischbachau and Schliersee are all alike, sleeping five. Spitzingsee is the nearby winter-sports base, and a car helps for everything else.
Schliersee is a market town of around 6,600 residents on the lake's north-eastern shore, on the B307 road, 7 km south of Miesbach. The lake's water quality is excellent, thanks to a wastewater purification system, and a leisure complex, Vital World Schliersee, has stood on the lakefront since late 2008. Skiing arrived in these mountains in the late 1880s, and the Spitzingsee, at around 1,085 metres, is the well-known winter sports and walking centre, reached by bus from the Fischhausen-Neuhaus rail stop. The homes under this name are uniform: they sleep five, with two bedrooms, and none lists a private pool, sauna or garden. They sit together, so the choice is one location, not a spread. Out of season the lake and the hills are quieter.
Alpine lake at around 1,085 metres, a well-known winter sports and mountain walking centre, with a 3.5 km path round the shore and a bus from Fischhausen-Neuhaus.
District town 7 km north of Schliersee on the B307, useful for shops and the road towards Munich.
Larger town 32 km from Schliersee, on the way to the Chiemgau.
Munich Airport is about an hour away by car. There is no direct public transport: the usual route is the S8, then the S3 to Holzkirchen, then bus 361, around three hours. Trains on the line to Munich call at Schliersee every 30 minutes at peak times and hourly otherwise.
Winter is the peak season at the Spitzingsee, considered snow-sure from late November to mid-April, with about 25 km of pistes. In summer hiking, cycling and swimming take over, and the Spitzingsee holds its Seefest on a weekend in late August. Outside peak hours trains run hourly, so allow for that on evening returns from Munich.
Regional trains on the line to Munich call at Schliersee every 30 minutes at peak hours and hourly otherwise, and also stop at Fischhausen-Neuhaus for the Spitzingsee bus.
