Bad Bayersoien suits couples who want a quiet Ammer valley village with its own swimming lake and Oberammergau a short drive away. The homes are mostly compact one-bedroom places, many with a garden. There is little to do after dark, and you will want a car for anything beyond the lake.
Bad Bayersoien is a village of around 1,300 people at just over 800 metres, in the Ammergau Alps nature park in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district. Our homes are clustered in the village and mostly sleep two, often with a garden. The draw is the Soier See, a shallow moor lake left behind by retreating glaciers. Because it is shallow it warms quickly, and the south shore has the bathing area, with a kiosk, a big lawn for lying out and boats for hire. The lake and its surroundings are a protected landscape. In the village, Saint George's church has a Gothic altar. Evenings are quiet, because this is a small village rather than a resort.
The woodcarving village known for painted house fronts and its Passion Play, around 13 minutes by car from Bad Bayersoien.
A protected gorge on the Ammer at the Echelsbacher Brücke, where the river breaks through rock at a spot called the Scheibum.
By car, take the A95 towards Garmisch-Partenkirchen and leave at the Murnau/Kochel junction. Without a car, ride the Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen railway to Murnau, change to the Ammertalbahn local line to Oberammergau, and bus 326 links Oberammergau with Bad Bayersoien in about 26 minutes. A car makes day trips far easier.
Summer is the season for the lake, which warms quickly because it is shallow. Spring and autumn suit walking in the nature park and the Ammer gorge. Out of season, check whether the lakeside kiosk and boat hire are open before planning a day around them.
Yes. The Soier See has a bathing area on its south shore with a kiosk, a large lawn and boat hire. The lake is shallow, so the water warms up quickly, and its quality is checked by regular measurements.
Very. It is a village of around 1,300 people, so evenings mean a meal and an early night. Anyone wanting nightlife or a wide choice of restaurants should base themselves in a larger town.
Pick Bad Bayersoien if a lake you can swim in matters most. Oberammergau has the painted houses, the woodcarvers and the Passion Play, plus a railway to Murnau, and it is only about 13 minutes away by car.
It takes a change. Take the Ammertalbahn from Murnau to Oberammergau, then bus 326, which takes about 26 minutes to Bad Bayersoien. Check bus times before you travel, as a hire car is simpler for day trips.
