Vöhl suits couples and small families who want a base by the Edersee, a reservoir in Hesse where the shoreline is free to use. Most homes have a garden and a fireplace and sleep a handful. Evenings are rural and quiet, and you will need a car to get between the lake villages.
Vöhl is a rural municipality of around 5,400 people in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district of Hesse, made up of 15 villages on the Edersee, with Vöhl itself as the small administrative centre. Our homes are scattered around it. The Edersee is a reservoir about 28 km long, and its whole shoreline is open to the public. Herzhausen, about four kilometres away, sits where the Eder runs into the western end of the lake. Barely any roads cross the northern Kellerwald, so getting round the water takes planning. Evenings are quiet and rural.
Beech forest and dry oak woods south of the lake, crossed by much of the Urwaldsteig, a trail of about 68 km around the reservoir.
A castle set high above the Edersee near Waldeck, which you can reach on the Waldecker Bergbahn.
The curved dam, 48 metres high with a 400 metre crest, was breached by the RAF's No. 617 Squadron in May 1943.
Vöhl lies about 40 km south-west of Kassel. Trains between Brilon, Korbach, Frankenberg and Marburg stop at the Nationalparkbahnhof in Herzhausen every one or two hours, so a car makes life much easier. Asel, on the lake, can only be reached by road from Herzhausen through Harbshausen.
Summer is for swimming, and the excursion boats run from late March to October. Because the lake is a reservoir, its level drops when less water flows in, and at very low levels the remains of drowned villages and the old Eder bridge at Asel come back into view.
Yes. The whole Edersee shoreline and its lidos are free to use. The DLRG keeps a lifeguard station on the north shore at Vöhl-Fürstental, which makes it a sensible spot for families with young children.
Because it is a reservoir, not a natural lake. When less water flows in, the level drops by a few centimetres a day, and after drought years it can fall far enough to reveal old village remains and the bridge at Asel.
Very near. The national park lies along the south side of the lake, and its visitor centre stands just south of Herzhausen, one of Vöhl's villages.
For forest walking, yes. Long-distance trails including the Kellerwaldsteig pass through Herzhausen, and the Urwaldsteig runs for about 68 km around the reservoir, largely through the national park's beech woods.
