Bruchhausen is a Sauerland village of about 1,200 people, part of Olsberg, with the Bruchhauser Steine rock towers just east of it. Homes here are small, mostly for two to four, and most have a garden. None has a pool, and a car helps for anything beyond the village.
Bruchhausen lies at about 450 metres in the Medebach valley, around 8 km south of the centre of Olsberg. A moated castle stands in the village, with a small brewery in its grounds. East of it, four porphyry rocks rise from the Istenberg, the tallest about 92 metres, and the Rothaarsteig long-distance trail passes just below the visitor centre there. The Langenberg, 843 metres and the highest point in North Rhine-Westphalia, lies within the village territory. The village also has its own ski area and a summer toboggan run. With so few residents, evenings are quiet.
Four volcanic rocks on the Istenberg with an Iron Age ring wall. Only the Feldstein can be climbed, by a steep path with railings and chains.
The town the village belongs to, on the Ruhr at the northern edge of the Rothaargebirge, about 8 km north of Bruchhausen.
At 843 metres the highest summit in North Rhine-Westphalia, lying within Bruchhausen's own territory.
Paderborn/Lippstadt is the practical airport, about 40 minutes by car from Olsberg, which is 8 km north of Bruchhausen. Trains serve Olsberg, but reaching Paderborn by public transport takes over three hours, so most visitors hire a car.
The Rothaargebirge is used all year: skiing and sledding in winter, hiking and cycling in summer. The village ski area and summer toboggan run follow the same split, so check what is running before you travel. Climbing is closed on most of the rocks at any time of year.
Only the Feldstein, whose summit stands at about 756 metres. It is reached by the steep Thomas-Neiss-Steige, which has railings and chains. Climbing on the other rocks has been banned all year since 1989 to protect nature.
Yes. The Rothaarsteig long-distance trail passes just below the visitor centre at the rocks, and several signposted trails there can be joined into a loop through forest, archaeology and geology themes.
The village has its own ski area, Auf dem Sternrodt. For bigger slopes people go to the wider Rothaargebirge, where Winterberg and Willingen are the main skiing centres.
No, none of the homes here has a pool. Most have a garden, a few have a sauna or an open fireplace, and they mostly sleep two to four, with a few larger ones for eight.
