Westerholt is an inland East Frisian village about 7 km from the North Sea, among farmland and moor. It suits a quiet base for coastal day trips; the sea itself is a drive away.
Westerholt is the administrative seat of the Holtriem group of municipalities in the Wittmund district, and Terheide and Willmsfeld lie within the same municipality. The Holtriem area takes in marsh, moor and geest, mostly dairy farmland with very little forest, and many local people once worked cutting peat in the nearby Berumerfehner Moor. A church built between 1250 and 1270 stands in the village centre, and Low German is well established in the area. The homes are spread around the village, most for about four people, a few for much bigger parties, and some have a garden or a sauna. There is no seafront: this is a countryside stay, with the coast about 7 km off.
A little over 13 km from Westerholt; Enno III of East Frisia moved his residence to Esens and became ruler of the Harlingerland.
About 17 km west of Westerholt, and with Esens and Aurich one of the three nearest towns.
Germany's largest raised-bog lake, at the centre of a nature reserve of about 1,180 hectares in the Holtriem area.
Bremen Airport has international connections. From Bremen, Esens is about an hour and a half by road, or about two and a half hours by train with a change at Sande; Westerholt is a little over 13 km from Esens.
About 7 km, so the beach is a short drive rather than a walk. Westerholt is inland, with Esens a little over 13 km away and Norden about 17 km to the west.
Mostly dairy farmland across marsh, moor and geest, with very little forest. The Ewiges Meer, Germany's largest raised-bog lake, lies in a large nature reserve in the Holtriem area, and the Holtriem-Wanderweg is one of the area's main attractions for walkers.
The village church dates from about 1250 to 1270, was first mentioned in 1420, and served as a fortress in a late-15th-century conflict. Bronze Age gold bowls were found at Terheide in 1872.
Yes, as a day trip. Langeoog and Spiekeroog belong to the same Wittmund district, but ferries sail from the coast, not from the village, so check sailing times before planning a day out.
