Spiekeroog suits families and walkers who want a car-free East Frisian island with one village and a fine-sand beach a short walk away. Getting here takes planning: the ferry from Neuharlingersiel runs to the tide, so sailings are limited and you leave the car on the mainland.
Spiekeroog is an island of dunes in the Wadden Sea national park, home to around 650 people, and its only village shares the island's name. Cars are banned apart from small electric vehicles, and cycling in the village is not allowed, so everything moves on foot or by handcart. The main bathing beach on the north coast has fine sand and is a 10 to 15 minute walk from the village. The Old Island Church dates from 1696. Evenings are low-key; the island cinema shows films several times a week all year. The homes are in the village, most sleeping four to six with two bedrooms.
The mainland harbour village for the Spiekeroog ferry, on the North Sea coast cycle route, with garages for island visitors' cars.
The neighbouring East Frisian island to the east, across the tidal channel called the Harle; Island Flyers from Harle airfield serve it.
Fly to Bremen, around an hour and twenty minutes' drive from the ferry harbour at Neuharlingersiel. The crossing to Spiekeroog takes 30 to 45 minutes and depends on the tide. By train, go to Esens or Norden and take a regional bus to the harbour. No car is needed, or allowed, on the island.
The horse tram runs from mid-April to mid-October, not in rain or strong wind, and spring brings jazz concerts. In winter the Wittbülten national park centre opens only on Tuesdays and Saturdays, the island doctor keeps shorter hours, and the tourist levy drops.
No. The island is car-free apart from small electric vehicles and emergency services, so you park in the garages near Neuharlingersiel and carry luggage across on the ferry. Heavy bags travel by electric cart, and handcarts can be hired.
Not on the main bathing beach. Spiekeroog has a separate dog beach with an off-lead area, and elsewhere on the island dogs must mostly be kept on a lead because it lies inside the national park.
Around 30 to 45 minutes from Neuharlingersiel. The channel is tidal, so only a limited number of sailings is possible; check the timetable before booking trains or flights.
No. It runs from mid-April to mid-October, out to the Westend by the west beach, and it stays in the shed in rain or strong wind.
