Pellworm suits couples who want a car-light island week of dike cycling and mudflats, reached by a 35-minute ferry. Homes here are small, mostly for two to four, each with a garden. Swimming only works at high tide, so this is no beach holiday.
Pellworm is a flat marsh island in the North Frisian Wadden Sea, lying about a metre below sea level behind a dike some 8 m high and 25 km long. What you do here is ride the roughly 28 km dike path, climb the lighthouse on its open dates and look at the old tower of the Old Church in the Alter Koog. Ostersiel is the main village and has an indoor pool, the island has its own museum, and Tammensiel has the harbour and a fish stand. The homes sit close together. Evenings are low-key: restaurants spread across the island, and in high season a minigolf place that serves food late. Spring and autumn are the quietest times.
In season, day-trip boats run from Pellworm to Hooge, as well as to Hallig Oland and Nordstrandischmoor.
A tiny hallig with three permanent residents, reached on guided mudflat walks from Pellworm.
The peninsula across the water, where the Pellworm ferry docks at Strucklahnungshörn harbour, with the North Sea Cycle Route passing the landing.
Take the train to Husum, then the bus to Strucklahnungshörn on Nordstrand, which is timed to meet ferries. The car ferry crosses to Pellworm in about 35 minutes. Register your car to guarantee a crossing; bikes always go. A bus meets every ferry for foot passengers.
The ferry runs all year, but the excursion boats to the halligen only sail in season. Spring and autumn, either side of the main season, are the calmest weeks on the island. Bring layers whatever the month.
Only at high tide. Bathing spots are dotted around the coast, but at low tide the sea pulls back over the mudflats. The indoor pool in Ostersiel is the fallback on cold days.
About 35 minutes from Strucklahnungshörn on Nordstrand. A deep-water landing on the island means sailings no longer depend much on the tide, and the ferry runs in almost any weather.
Not necessarily. Many visitors cycle, since the dike path is about 28 km round, and a shared island taxi for up to eight people fills gaps when school buses aren't running.
On certain dates, yes. The cast steel lighthouse opens for climbs only on set days, and children under eight are not allowed up for safety reasons, so check before you plan around it.
