Großefehn suits couples and small families who want flat cycling by canals, white lift bridges and windmills in the middle of East Frisia. Homes are spread across the villages of the municipality, mostly sleeping four, each with a garden. It is not on the coast, so a beach day means a sandy lake beach in the municipality or a drive.
Großefehn is a scattered rural municipality of 14 villages in the middle of East Frisia, and the oldest fen colony of its kind in the region. In 1633 four Emden merchants set out to cut peat from the raised bog by digging canals on the Dutch model; one runs from Wiesmoor towards Emden as the Fehntjer Tief. The view is wide meadow, white folding bridges and windmills. Mittegroßefehn, about 12 km south-east of Aurich, has a church from 1857, and the nature reserve along the Flumm and Fehntjer Tief starts at its northern edge. Homes are spread over several kilometres of village. Evenings are low-key, though the historic brewery stays open until ten most nights from April to October.

Museum in Westgroßefehn on how the bog was cleared for peat, beside the Onken windmill.
The old fen canal running from Wiesmoor through Ostgroßefehn, Mittegroßefehn and Westgroßefehn towards Emden, with meadows to explore by bike or boat.
Groningen is the nearest airport; from Amsterdam the drive takes around three hours ten minutes. By public transport, go via Groningen to Leer and on to the Mittegroßefehn B72/Dreeskenweg stop. With villages spread out, a car or bike is close to essential.

Yes. A lake in the municipality has a sandy beach where you can swim, which is far easier than heading out to the North Sea coast.
That is the main draw. Cycle and boat routes follow the canals past meadows, lift bridges and windmills, and the Fehntjer Tief links the fen villages towards Emden.
There is. Ostfriesen Bräu is a historic rural brewery with a brewhouse museum, tours and brewing courses. It opens most days from April to October, with shorter hours through the winter.
