Ludorf suits couples and small families who want a quiet Müritz village with an octagonal medieval church and a 1698 manor house. Röbel's harbour and old town are about 5 km away. Homes are mostly small, and there is no railway station, so plan on a car.
Ludorf is a small village of a few hundred people, now part of the municipality of Südmüritz, close to the Müritz, Germany's largest inland lake. Its two landmarks are an eight-sided brick church, consecrated in 1346 and laid out to the same plan as Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the manor house built in 1698 by Adam Levin von Knuth, now a hotel on the lake's western shore whose restaurant serves Mecklenburg and Pomeranian dishes. A chestnut avenue leads from the manor grounds to the lake. The homes are scattered around Ludorf rather than in one street, and most have a garden. Evenings mean the manor restaurant or a drive into Röbel.
A small lakeside town about 5 km away, with colourful half-timbered houses, the town harbour and St Marien, an early Gothic hall church whose tower you can climb.
The lakeside town with the Müritzeum and the nearest railway station, linked to Röbel by passenger ship in about 75 minutes.
A boat trip from Röbel's harbour combines easily with an excursion into the national park, an easy day out from Ludorf.
Berlin is the practical gateway: Röbel is about 164 km from BER, and the drive from Berlin city to Ludorf takes around an hour and a half. Rostock-Laage is closer but has few flights. Without a car, take the RE5 to Waren and a taxi from there.
Summer is when the lake is at its busiest, and Röbel holds its Seefest on the third full weekend of July. Out of season, the Müritzeum in Waren closes earlier from November to March, and Ludorf church can only be visited by arrangement in the winter months.
Its octagonal plan copies the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Local legend credits a crusading knight, Wipert von Morin, with bringing the idea back from the Holy Land. It was consecrated in 1346, though it may be about 150 years older.
Yes, in the Müritz. Röbel, about 5 km away, has the Müritzbad, a natural lake bath with big lawns, plus the MüritzTherme, the region's largest leisure pool, with a sauna and an outdoor pool.
It takes some effort. The nearest station is Waren, reached from Berlin on the RE5, and the last stretch is by taxi. A passenger ship also links Waren with Röbel, about 75 minutes on the water.
It is well placed for it. The Mecklenburg Lakes cycle route and a Müritz cycle path both reach Röbel next door, so long lakeside rides start a short pedal from Ludorf.
