Kargow suits walkers, cyclists and birdwatchers who want the Müritz National Park close by, with Waren next door for trains. Homes listed under Kargow are scattered around the northern Müritz rather than in the village itself, so check each map. Most sleep about four, all have a garden, and you will want a car.
Kargow is a small municipality of about 670 people south-east of Waren, made up of hamlets such as Federow, Speck and Schwarzenhof, and much of its land lies inside the Müritz National Park. That park is mostly forest, with lakes and bog in between, and is known for its sea eagles, ospreys and the cranes that fly in each October. Kargow village has a church from the late 13th century, and Federow's church has been used for radio plays since 2006. The homes filed under Kargow are spread over several kilometres around the north of the Müritz, so some are nearer Waren than Kargow. Waren borders the municipality to the west, with regional buses running there daily.
The park's main northern entrance, 7 km south of Waren, where a webcam in the exhibition looks live into an osprey nest.
A 21 km round route around the Speck lakes, joined from Federow or Schwarzenhof to the north or from Boek to the south.
A 55 metre tower on the Käflingsberg, which at just over 100 metres is the highest point in the municipality.
The lake town on Kargow's western boundary, with the Müritzeum information centre and its large freshwater aquarium and Intercity Express trains on the line to Rostock.
Drive via the A19, leaving at the Waren exit. By rail, ICE trains between Munich and Rostock stop at Waren, and regional trains run hourly from Berlin to Neustrelitz with connections every two hours to Waren. Regional buses run daily from Waren, but a car is the practical choice.
Plan on Easter to October, when the Federow information centre opens daily and Schwarzenhof's opens at Easter and from May. October is when the cranes fly in. Outside that window, check opening times before you go and expect the forest paths to be quiet.
In October, when they fly in. The Müritz National Park is famous for these cranes and for its sea eagles and ospreys, and the Federow centre has a live webcam on an osprey nest.
Partly. The national park bus line runs about hourly between Waren and Boek, a combined ticket also covers the boats of the Weiße Flotte, and bikes go free carried on a trailer when space allows.
Very. The Berlin to Copenhagen cycle route crosses the municipality, and the park has a network of around 650 km of cycle and walking paths.
A few. About a tenth of the park is former military training ground contaminated with munitions, and trees or branches can fall at any time, so stay on the paths and avoid the forest in storms.
