Krakow am See suits families and cyclists who want a small town on the Krakower See, a lake broken into many bays and islands. The homes are mostly modest, sleeping around four. Regular trains stopped running in 2004 and evenings are quiet, so plan on driving.
Krakow am See is a small town of about 3,400 people on the north-west shore of the Krakower See, a lake of some 15 square kilometres cut into many bays and islands. The Krakower Obersee is a nature reserve, and the lakes form part of the Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide nature park. The centre has a neo-Gothic town hall from 1875, a letterpress museum in the old school and an 1866 synagogue now used for exhibitions. Swimming is at the Jörnberg, below a 27.7 m lookout tower. The homes are spread around the town, and evenings mostly mean a hotel restaurant.
Town about 18 km north of Krakow am See, an easy day trip by car.
Village with a church from about 1230 and Schloss Bellin, a 1912 building now used as a hotel.
Former Benedictine nunnery west of Krakow, rebuilt in the Schinkel style in the 19th century.
Village with a water mill kept as a technical monument and a leisure and bird park.
Fly to Hamburg or Berlin Brandenburg; Rostock's regional airport has only a few charter flights. On the A19 leave at exit 14 (Krakow), then drive about 8 km south-west on country roads. Regular trains ended in 2004, so you need a car.
Yes. There is a swimming area at the Jörnberg, the hill with the lookout tower, and boats can be hired on the lake. The Krakower Obersee is a nature reserve.
Not a regular one. Scheduled passenger trains ended in 2004 and only occasional services run, so plan to drive, leaving the A19 at exit 14.
Very. The Krakower Seerundweg loops round the lake, the long-distance Berlin to Copenhagen cycle route passes through town, and the Krakower Herrenhausweg links manor houses nearby.
Krakow, if the lake matters: swimming and boat hire are on the edge of town. Güstrow lies about 18 km north and works well as a day trip instead.
