About Wilsum
Wilsum lies in Lower Saxony's Grafschaft Bentheim district, near the border with the Netherlands, at an elevation of only 42 metres. Its highest point, the Wilsumer Berge at 80 metres, is a leftover Ice Age moraine, and the surroundings are sandy lowland, heath and moor. The Wilsumer Moor is a protected 48-hectare fen. A watermill, Schoneveld's Mill, is about 700 years old and still grinds grain. Every home here sits in one spot, so you pick the home, not the neighbourhood. Few have a sauna, none a pool, and most are small, though the odd one sleeps a big group. Cycling and walking are the main activities, on numerous marked routes.
Is Wilsum right for you?
- Best for
- Cyclists and couples wanting flat, quiet country by the Dutch border
- Not for you if
- You want a beach, a pool or restaurants on foot, since this is a small village with none of them.

Is Wilsum in Emsland?
No. Wilsum is in the Grafschaft Bentheim district of Lower Saxony, next to the Dutch border, and belongs to the Samtgemeinde Uelsen. Our site lists it with Emsland holiday homes, but the village itself is in a neighbouring district.
Is Wilsum good for cycling?
Yes. The village has numerous cycle routes through low sandy country, moor and heath, and from spring to autumn bus line 10 carries bicycle trailers on certain runs.
How far is Wilsum from Nordhorn?
Around 20 minutes by car. By public transport it takes closer to an hour and a quarter, using a train from Nordhorn to Neuenhaus and then bus line 10. A car gives far more freedom out here.
