Riedenburg is a small Altmühl river town in Lower Bavaria, below Rosenburg castle and its falconry shows, inside a nature park. Without a car the journey from Munich takes over three hours.
Riedenburg is a town of about 6,100 people at 360 metres on the Altmühl, 16 km north-west of Kelheim and 29 km north-east of Ingolstadt. It lies on the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal and inside the Altmühltal Nature Park. Schloss Rosenburg stands on a hill above the town, probably built in the second half of the 12th century, and its falcon farm, founded in 1978, runs bird-of-prey flight shows; entry to the courtyard is paid. Prunn Castle is also in Riedenburg. Our homes sit together at one spot. They are mostly small, for around four people with two bedrooms, and almost none has a pool. Few list wifi, so check if you need it.

About 29 km south-west, and the rail change point for buses to Riedenburg from Munich.
Hilltop castle above the town with a museum, a restaurant and a falcon farm founded in 1978.
A castle within Riedenburg, counted among the best-preserved knights' castles in Bavaria.
Home to the Hobbysteinbruch, a family-friendly quarry for hunting fossils in Jurassic limestone.
Munich is the usual gateway, about 1 hour 10 minutes by road from Riedenburg. By public transport it takes over three hours, with a train to Ingolstadt and then a bus. A car makes the nature park easier to cover.
The Solnhofen hobby quarry opens from late March to late October, which is a fair guide to the main season. The Rosenburg falcon shows keep their own hours, so check before you go. Kelheim boat trips and cycling along the Altmühl suit warmer months better than winter, when you should confirm what is open.
Yes. Riedenburg lies inside the Altmühltal Nature Park, which covers 2,906 square km, and the 166 km Altmühltal-Radweg explores the park. Check on a map which stretch passes your home.
