Nesselwang suits families and walkers who want a small Allgäu ski hill, the Alpspitze, with its lift starting in town. There are only a handful of homes here, mostly small flats, and the skiing is modest: the runs stay between about 900 and 1,500 metres.
Nesselwang is a market town of about 3,800 people at 867 metres in the Ostallgäu, granted its market rights in 1429 and with seventeen hamlets around it. The Alpspitzbahn starts in the town and climbs almost to the top of the 1,575 metre Alpspitze; in summer it serves a 1,000 metre summer toboggan run and the Alpspitzkick zipline. The town's ABC leisure pools are open all year, and the pilgrimage church of Maria Trost and the parish church of St Andreas are the main sights. Our few homes stand close together in the town, and most have a sauna.
The 1,640 metre summit next to the Alpspitze, with mostly wide walking paths.
The two royal castles, about 25 km from Nesselwang.
Memmingen airport is about 50 km north-west, around 35 minutes by road. Munich airport is about 130 km. Nesselwang's small unstaffed station is on a mostly single-track line, and the train from Memmingen takes about two and a half hours, so a car is far easier.
For families and beginners, yes; for big mileage, no. The Alpspitz area runs from about 900 to 1,500 metres on two cabin lifts, a chairlift and three tows, and there is a 4 km toboggan run too.
Yes, if you like being outdoors. The Alpspitzbahn runs a 1,000 metre summer toboggan run and a 1.2 km zipline, there are wide paths on the Alpspitze and Edelsberg, a nine-hole golf course and year-round indoor pools in the town.
About 25 km, so the castles at Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are an easy day out from Nesselwang. Linderhof Palace is further, about 55 km away.
