Fischen im Allgäu suits couples who want a quiet spa village on the Iller, 5.5 km north of Oberstdorf. The Hörner mountains rise behind it and Regional Express trains stop in the village. Homes here are small and sleep four at most, so families of five or more need to look elsewhere.
Fischen is a village of about 3,200 people on the bank of the Iller, with the Hörnergruppe rising to the north-west and the Daumen group to the east. It has been a heilklimatischer Kurort, a climatic health resort, since 2002, and spa life centres on the Kurhaus Fiskina and its park; there is also a leisure pool with a 58 m slide. The homes sit close together in the village and are all small, for two to four; check each listing for a garden. Around 50 km of footpaths start here, and the Iller cycle path from Ulm to Oberstdorf passes through. In winter the walking gives way to cross-country trails, night trails among them.
The larger resort 5.5 km to the south, at the end of the same railway line from Immenstadt.
Range north-west of the village topped by the Riedberger Horn at 1,787 m, with a panoramic route from the Ofterschwanger Horn to the Bolsterlanger Horn.
German-Austrian nature park that takes in Fischen and the Hörner range, with mountain and bike tours starting in the village.
Memmingen Airport is around 50 minutes by car. Regional Express trains on the Immenstadt to Oberstdorf line stop at Fischen and Langenwang, though by rail from Memmingen the trip takes over two hours. The B 19 runs through the village. A car helps but is not essential.
Summer suits the 50 km of footpaths, mountain and bike tours and the Iller cycle path. Winter brings cross-country skiing, with night trails and the ski museum in the Heimathaus. On wet days, the Kurhaus Fiskina and the leisure pool with its long slide are the fallbacks.
Fischen is the smaller and quieter option, a spa village of about 3,200 people. Oberstdorf, 5.5 km south, is the bigger resort, and the regional train links the two.
Yes. Regional Express trains on the Immenstadt to Oberstdorf line call at Fischen and at Langenwang. Long-distance trains no longer run on the line, so expect to change on the way.
Very much so. About 50 km of footpaths start in the village, which belongs to the Nagelfluhkette nature park below the Hörner range, and a high panoramic route links the Ofterschwanger Horn and the Bolsterlanger Horn.
For cross-country skiers it is. Trails run from the village, including night trails, and the Heimathaus has a ski museum for a short visit on a cold afternoon.
