Val Thorens suits keen skiers who want to stay as high as possible, in a compact resort at about 2,300 m in the Three Valleys. These are small flats rather than villas, and the road in is long, with Moûtiers about an hour below.
Val Thorens sits at about 2,300 m and is part of Les Trois Vallées, which claims about 600 km of slopes, though an independent measure put it nearer 493 km. The first drag lifts opened in 1971, so this is a resort built for skiing, not an old village. The season usually runs from mid-November to early May. You can ski in from Les Menuires, Méribel and Orelle, and the Cime Caron cable car climbs to 3,200 m with a view of Mont Blanc. The homes are packed within a few hundred metres of each other, nearly all small apartments with no garden. Cars are banned in the resort, so evenings are spent within the resort itself.
You can ski in from Les Menuires, and the pistes between the two are mostly graded blue or red.
Another Three Valleys resort you can ski in from, again mostly on blue or red pistes.
Orelle joined the Three Valleys in 1996 and gives a third ski-in route to the resort.
The nearest station, about 35 km away, with TGV trains in ski season and buses up to the resort.
Chambéry-Savoie, about 120 km away, has seasonal flights in the ski season; Grenoble is about 195 km. The nearest station is Moûtiers, 35 km below, with buses up and a drive of about an hour. Cars are officially banned in the resort: drop luggage, then use a paid car park.
The ski season usually runs from mid-November to early May, and the height makes it one of the more snow-sure resorts in Europe. High lifts often close in poor weather. In summer, mountain biking, walking, paragliding and quad biking are offered, but this is a ski resort first; the old glacier lifts were removed by 2002.
The village sits at about 2,300 m, and the Cime Caron cable car tops out at 3,200 m, with a view to Mont Blanc. That height is why the season runs from mid-November to early May and why snow is more reliable than in lower resorts.
Not into the centre. Cars are officially banned in the resort: you can drop luggage, but the vehicle must then go to a paid car park, and police check for violations. The road up from Moûtiers takes about an hour.
Yes. You can ski in from Les Menuires, Méribel and Orelle, mostly on blue or red pistes. The highest lifts often close in poor weather, so allow time to get back before they shut.
The season usually runs from mid-November to early May. The Three Valleys area as a whole claims about 600 km of slopes, and Val Thorens itself has 68 marked runs and 31 lifts.
It offers walking, mountain biking, paragliding and quad biking, and the Cime Caron cable cars reach the viewpoint. It is a purpose-built ski resort, though, so summer visitors should not expect a village with a long history.
