Samoëns works for families after a real Alpine village with a lift into the Grand Massif and a pool and sauna to come back to. It is a valley-floor village, so you ride up to the snow rather than skiing to the door.
Samoëns is an Alpine commune of about 2,200 people in the Giffre Valley on the Swiss border, with an average elevation of around 710 metres. A lift at the edge of town climbs to Samoëns 1600, the Plateau des Saix, and into the Grand Massif. The village has a long stonemasons' tradition: by 1659 its stonecutters had set up a well-known brotherhood, and they worked with Vauban on his fortifications. Its Jaÿsinia alpine garden, founded in 1906 by Marie-Louise Cognacq-Jaÿ, a local who founded La Samaritaine in Paris, is open all year and free. The homes are grouped together in Samoëns, and most come with a pool and sauna; check each listing for details. Non-ski options include dog-sledding, caving and diving under ice.
Neighbouring village in the same valley, sharing many activities with Samoëns, with a gondola into the Grand Massif and a small lake.
Horseshoe-shaped natural amphitheatre in the nature reserve of Sixt, a village linked to the Samoëns valley by a single road.
Grand Massif resort between 1,600 and 2,500 metres, connected to Samoëns by the link via the Combe Vernant that opened in 1975.
Geneva Airport is about a 70 km drive from Samoëns. A car is the simplest way to arrive and to reach Sixt and the Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval in summer, though the lift from the edge of town gets skiers onto the slopes.
Winter brings skiing across the Grand Massif, with 265 km of runs spread over five resorts from about 700 to 2,500 metres. In summer Samoëns works as a mountain base, with the free alpine garden, valley walks and the Cascade du Rouget waterfall, a 40-minute walk from Sixt village.
Large. The Grand Massif links Samoëns, Morillon, Flaine, Les Carroz and Sixt, with 265 km of runs between about 700 and 2,500 metres.
The two are close together in the valley and share many activities. Samoëns is the larger village with its alpine garden, while Morillon is smaller, with its own gondola and a small lake.
Yes. The Jaÿsinia alpine garden is open all year and free, and the Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval and the Cascade du Rouget waterfall are up the valley around Sixt, reached by a single road.
About a 70 km drive. That makes Geneva the practical airport for Samoëns, and a hire car covers the whole valley.
