Les Carroz suits skiing families wanting a wooded balcony village linked into the 265 km Grand Massif, under an hour from Geneva airport. Homes sleep four to eight, mostly with two bedrooms. Bigger groups will find space tight.
Les Carroz sits on a sunny plateau at about 1,140 metres in the commune of Arâches-la-Frasse. It began as a few high-pasture farms, opened its first ski tow in 1936 and now links with Flaine, Morillon, Samoëns and Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval in the Grand Massif, whose runs reach 2,500 metres. The slopes around the village are wooded, with views across to Mont Blanc. In summer the leisure base has a pool, tennis courts and a skate park, and the area offers climbing, caving, canyoning and rafting. Our homes are grouped close together; check each listing for a pool or sauna.
Higher resort in the same Grand Massif lift system, spanning 1,600 to 2,500 metres, where the Grandes Platières cable car was built in 1967.
End of the Cascade, a long run through high mountains and forest past waterfalls; a bus brings skiers back from Sixt to Samoëns.
Grand Massif village linked to Flaine via the Combe Vernant since 1975, where the bus from Sixt brings skiers back to the cabin lift.
Geneva airport is about 47 minutes away by car. By train, change at Annemasse for Magland, a trip of nearly three hours; FlixBus runs to Sallanches. Both leave a final transfer, so a hire car or booked transfer is simpler.
Large: Les Carroz is part of the Grand Massif, 265 km of runs shared with Flaine, Morillon, Samoëns and Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval and topping out at 2,500 metres.
About 47 minutes by car. Public transport takes far longer: nearly three hours by train via Annemasse to Magland, plus a final transfer to the village.
A long descent across high mountain, down through forest and past waterfalls to Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval. Access is from the top of the long Gers drag lift, via the Styx run when avalanche conditions permit, or by a blue piste off the top of Flaine. A bus takes skiers back to the lift at Samoëns.
Yes, with plenty to fill a week. The village leisure base has a pool, tennis courts, a skate park and beach volleyball, and the surrounding area offers hiking, climbing, canyoning and rafting.
