Flaine suits ski families who want a car-free resort in the Grand Massif, about 70 km from Geneva airport. It was built for skiing in the 1960s, to brutalist designs by Marcel Breuer, so it has none of an old village's look. Homes sleep four to eight; check each listing for a pool or sauna.
Flaine began when Éric and Sylvie Boissonnas discovered the site in 1959, and it opened in January 1969 with buildings by the Bauhaus architect Marcel Breuer. Its base sits at 1,600 metres in what is often called the big snowy bowl, with one of the best snow records in the Alps. The resort is car-free, and its art collection includes Picasso's La Tête de Femme, Dubuffet's Le Boqueteau and Vasarely's Les Trois Hexagones. Its lifts link into the Grand Massif with Samoëns, Morillon and Les Carroz. The homes are grouped together in the resort and sleep four to eight; check each listing for a pool or sauna.
A village whose slopes connect with Flaine's within the linked Grand Massif ski area.
Once a farming hamlet of a few houses, now a resort on a sunny plateau above the Arve valley, linked into the Grand Massif.

Geneva airport is about 70 km away, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes by car or taxi and 1 hour 45 minutes by bus, and shuttles and buses run from the airport in the winter season. Lyon is about three hours' drive. Flaine itself is car-free.
Winter is the main season. In summer the golf course at 1,900 metres opens from July to September, the rugged, cracked rock of the Désert de Platé shows its crevasses and potholes most clearly, and each August the Académie Internationale de Musique holds free concerts in the resort's auditorium.

Marcel Breuer, the Bauhaus architect, designed Flaine in a brutalist style for its founders, Éric and Sylvie Boissonnas. The resort opened on 17 January 1969.
Big, because Flaine is part of the linked Grand Massif with Samoëns, Morillon and Les Carroz, and the Grand Massif has about 265 km of runs. Flaine's own slopes run from 1,600 metres to over 2,500 metres.
For golfers and music lovers, yes. The golf course at 1,900 metres is open from July to September, and the Académie Internationale de Musique holds free concerts in the auditorium every August.
