Le Bono suits walkers and couples who want an old oyster port on the Gulf of Morbihan, with a listed suspension bridge over the river. None of the homes has a pool, so this is a base for riverside walks and day trips rather than lazy days at the villa.
Le Bono sits where the Bono river meets the Auray river, about 4 km south of Auray, on the Gulf of Morbihan. It grew around a natural harbour, once home to about a hundred boats, and from the 1860s the riverbanks filled with family oyster beds. The old suspension bridge, built between 1838 and 1840 and restored in 2005, is a listed monument, and the Pont Joseph Le Brix of 1969 carries the road 26 metres above the water. The homes are tightly grouped in the village, mostly for four to eight, and many have a garden. Evenings are quiet, and Auray is only 4 km away when you want more choice.
About 4 km north, with the old port of Saint-Goustan, starting point of an 18.5 km walk along the two rivers that takes in the old Bono bridge.
Around 17 minutes by car, Vannes is linked to Le Bono by an hourly bus, so a day there needs no car.
Nantes Atlantique airport is around an hour and a half by car. Vannes is about 17 minutes away and buses run to Auray, Baden and Vannes, but a car makes the wider gulf much easier to explore.
A listed suspension bridge, built between 1838 and 1840, with a second suspension bridge following in 1871. It was restored to its original form in 2005. A walking route from Auray's Saint-Goustan port, about 18.5 km and four hours, takes it in.
Historically, very much so. Oyster farming began around 1865, and by 1900 about 200 family oyster farms lined the Bono river, though disease in 1974 and 1980 devastated the native flat oyster beds.
You can. Line 21 links Le Bono with Vannes in around half an hour, and line 6 runs to Auray, Baden and Port-Blanc. Driving to Vannes takes about 17 minutes.
The Kernours tumulus, dating to around 3000 BC, is the one to see. It has a carving of a sea creature, identified as a cuttlefish.
