Erdeven suits families and walkers wanting a long Atlantic beach and the standing stones of Kerzérho, with Carnac a short drive away. Most homes have a garden and the typical one sleeps about six. Swimming needs care, as the main beach is unsupervised and has strong currents near the Étel bar.
Erdeven is a seaside commune of about 4,000 people on the Atlantic coast of Morbihan, beside a seven-kilometre beach. Kerminihy, the wildest of its beaches, is very long and backed by a dune ridge, with fine sand and free parking. It is also unsupervised, and swimming is banned on the side nearest the Étel bar because of the currents. The homes sit close together, most with a garden, and the typical one has three bedrooms and sleeps about six. Some sleep eight or more. The Kerzérho alignments and several dolmens lie just outside the commune.
Home to about 3,000 standing stones, with the Ménec, Kermario and Kerlescan alignments the most impressive; around 11 minutes by car from Erdeven to Carnac-Plage.
Stone rows just outside Erdeven, with the Mané-Croch, Mané-Bras and Crucuno dolmens also close by.
The Étel bar lies off the east side of Kerminihy beach, and its strong currents close the nearest section to swimmers.
Lorient, which has an airport, is about 28 minutes by car from Erdeven. Public transport is slow, with a train from Lorient to Auray and bus 618 taking nearly two hours, so a car is needed.
Dogs are banned on Kerminihy beach from 1 April to 30 September, even on a lead. The Carnac stones show best in the low light of morning or late afternoon, so plan visits for those hours.
With care. Kerminihy is unsupervised, and swimming is banned on the side nearest the Étel bar because of strong currents. Elsewhere on the beach it is at your own risk, so look for signs at the car park.
Not at Kerminihy from 1 April to 30 September, even on a lead. Other beaches in the commune may have different rules, so read the notices before letting a dog run.
