About La Bernerie-en Retz
La Bernerie-en-Retz has about 3,500 residents and covers just 6 square kilometres, with its own station on the Nantes to Pornic line. It lies on the Côte de Jade, the coastal strip of the Pays de Retz, whose name refers to the jade-green colours of the sea and dates from the 1930s. This southern stretch, from La Plaine-sur-Mer to La Bernerie, is described as wilder than the north, with coves and smaller beaches separated by rocky areas and schist cliffs. The homes are tightly grouped, mostly small with room for four, over half with a garden. Tourism on this coast began in the late 17th century with therapeutic bathing, so the seaside habit is old. Out of season the town is small and quiet.
