Dinard suits couples and small families who like large sandy beaches, coastal walks and a town of grand seaside villas. Evenings are about bars and restaurants, as there is little nightlife, and summer crowds push the population to several times its usual size.
Dinard is a Breton resort on the Emerald Coast, facing Saint-Malo across the Rance estuary. British and American aristocrats made it a fashionable summer resort in the late nineteenth century, and the town still has 407 listed villas. Our homes are in and just outside the town, mostly two-bedroom places for about four, with a third having a garden and almost none a pool. The main sandy beach is Plage de l'Écluse, with Saint-Énogat and Prieuré the next largest, and each main beach has a lifeguard post. Palms line the Promenade du Clair de Lune along the shore. There is a casino by the Écluse beach, and beyond that the evenings mean bars and restaurants. The population of roughly 10,800 swells beyond 40,000 in summer.
A walled city across the Rance, rebuilt from 1948 to 1960 after wartime bombing, with ferries to Portsmouth, Poole and Jersey and a shuttle boat to Dinard.
Next-door resort with the Longchamp surfing beach and Port-Blanc, shared with Dinard along the coast path.
A cliff-fringed headland in Côtes-d'Armor with two lighthouses, one from the seventeenth century and one from 1950.
In La Richardais, a 1960s tidal power plant and tourist site linking Dinard and Saint-Malo.
Dinard-Pleurtuit-Saint-Malo airport is only about 5 km south of the town. Saint-Malo, about 25 minutes from the airport by road, has Brittany Ferries from Portsmouth. A shuttle boat links Dinard to Saint-Malo; a car helps for Cap Fréhel and further coast.
Summer is the busy season, when the population of about 10,800 passes 40,000. The climate is oceanic and windy, with mild summers and a fair share of rain, including about twelve days of rain in a typical January. The Dinard British Film Festival takes place in early October. The coast path from Prieuré to Port-Blanc, which reaches smaller beaches only accessible on foot, works in any month if you bring a windproof.
Yes, for beach families who like to walk. Dinard has several large, clean sandy beaches with lifeguard posts on the main ones, and a coast path links them. Our homes are mostly two-bedroom, so they suit smaller families.
Dinard is calmer and set up around villas and sandy beaches. Saint-Malo is a bigger, busier walled city with the ferry port. The two are linked by a shuttle boat across the Rance.
Plage de l'Écluse is the main beach, next to the casino. Saint-Énogat and Prieuré are the next largest, and Prieuré looks across to Saint-Malo.
Bars and restaurants, plus a casino beside the Écluse beach. Nightlife options are few, though there is also a hall that hosts exhibitions.
Yes. Dinard-Pleurtuit-Saint-Malo airport is about 5 km south-south-west of the town, and Saint-Malo is about 25 minutes from the airport by car.
