Villas in La Grande Motte
La Grande Motte suits couples and families who want a planned seaside resort with a big marina, cycle paths and public beaches. It is a modern concrete resort built in the 1960s and 1970s, not an old Languedoc town, and the wind blows hard for much of the year.

About La Grande Motte
La Grande-Motte was largely built between 1960 and 1975 on virgin beachfront dunes, as part of the Mission Racine coastal scheme. The architect Jean Balladur took his pyramid shapes from pre-Columbian examples such as Teotihuacan, and many of the main buildings are stepped like that. Car parks were planned no more than 600 m from the beach, and the resort has both public and private beaches. Our homes lie close together around the resort. They are mostly one-bedroom places for about four, none sleeps more than seven, about a third have a pool and nearly half have air conditioning. The Blue Flag marina has 1,530 berths and nearly 7 km of routes carry the voie verte label for walkers and cyclists. The town lives mainly on summer tourism, and its population drops noticeably in winter. The Étang de l'Or lagoon lies to the north-west.

Is La Grande Motte good for families?
Yes. It has public beaches, a marina and marked cycle routes, and car parking was planned within about 600 m of the beach. The homes are mostly small, so it suits families of up to four best.
What are the pyramid buildings in La Grande Motte?
They are the resort's trademark apartment blocks, designed by Jean Balladur. He took inspiration from pre-Columbian pyramids such as Teotihuacan, and many of the prominent buildings are pyramidal.
How far is La Grande Motte from Montpellier airport?
It is a short drive. The airport is in Mauguio, the commune La Grande-Motte was split from in 1974, about 7 km east-south-east of Montpellier itself. Two roughly 20 km expressways connect the resort to the A9 motorway.
Is La Grande Motte windy?
Often. Winds above 5 m/s blow for 40 to 50 percent of the time, so a windbreak is useful on the beach.
La Grande Motte or Aigues-Mortes?
They suit different trips. La Grande-Motte is a modern seaside resort with a marina, while Aigues-Mortes is a walled medieval town in the Petite Camargue with ramparts you can see on a day out.
