Solenzara works well for families after a beach and marina base on Corsica's east coast, with the Bavella pass about 40 minutes inland. Around half the homes have a private pool and most have air-con. It is lively in summer, though, and Figari and Bastia airports are both over an hour's drive away.
Solenzara is a 19th-century village, named after its river, that grew into a resort from the 1960s, with the small hilltop village of Sari above it. The 450-berth marina sits at the river mouth in the middle of town, and a big beach runs straight off it. Shops, bars and restaurants cluster around the centre, and the port is the place for an ice cream. Our homes are spread around the village and down the coast towards Canella, a sheltered cove of fine golden sand about 400 metres long, set among pines south of the village. Inland the commune is mountainous and forested, with the Aiguilles de Bavella to the west. Typical homes sleep four or five, and few take more than eight.
Mountain pass about 28 km from Solenzara by road, a drive of roughly 40 minutes into the hills.
Sheltered cove of fine golden sand south of the village, a few kilometres from Favone, ringed by pines and maquis, with rocks at each end for snorkelling.
Beach at the edge of the commune near Canella, with snack bars and a sailing centre on the sand.
Hilltop village above Solenzara, looking out over the coastal plain and a long stretch of the east coast.
Figari airport is about 68 km away, a drive of around 1 hour 15 minutes. Bastia airport takes about an hour and a half by car. There is a bus from Bastia airport, but it takes around two hours, so plan on a hire car.
Summer is when Solenzara is at its liveliest, and sea trips and boat hire run from the port through the season. The marina also takes boats over the winter, but that does not mean the resort stays busy: outside the main season, check which restaurants and boat operators are open before you travel. Walkers and mountain bikers have the trails inland whatever the beach is doing.
Yes, particularly at Canella, where the sea floor slopes gently and stays shallow for several metres. The main beach is reached straight from the marina, and the town centre has shops, ice cream and restaurants close at hand.
About 28 km, or roughly 40 minutes by car. For a shorter outing, Monte Santu, at 599 metres, gives views over the Solenzara river to the Aiguilles de Bavella.
Pick Solenzara for a real centre with bars, restaurants and a 450-berth marina. Favone, at the edge of the commune near Canella, is a smaller place, with snack bars and a sailing centre on its beach.
Quite a lot outdoors. The commune offers diving, canyoning, riding and via ferrata, there is a bolted climbing site nearby, and walking and mountain bike trails cross the hills. Boat trips and boat hire leave from the port.
About half of them do, so filter for a pool if it matters. Most have air-conditioning, and few sleep more than eight, so larger groups have limited choice here.
