Sainte Lucie Porto Vecchio is a good fit for families after the shallow, pine-shaded beach at Pinarellu and a village with its own shops. Many homes here are family houses, and quite a few sleep eight or more. Only a minority have a pool, so the beach does most of the work, and Porto-Vecchio's old town is about 15 km away.
Sainte-Lucie-de-Porto-Vecchio, to give it its full name, is not a commune in its own right but the seaward part of Zonza, a village built on the plain about 3 km from the coast. The RT 10, the old RN 198 between Bonifacio and Bastia, runs straight through it, past a small supermarket, pharmacy, medical centre, fuel station and a bookshop. The D168A heads east to Pinarellu, a small fishing and pleasure port whose white-sand beach sits in a cove lined by about 10 hectares of pines, with a square Genoese tower on the point. Our homes are spread across the few kilometres between the village and that shore. Most are houses for six or more with air conditioning and Wi-Fi; a garden is common and a pool is not. Just north on the RT 10, Fautea has two beaches below another Genoese tower, on land protected since 1979.
Fine white sand in a pine-lined bay about 3 km from the village, shallow for a long way out, with beach mats and a beach wheelchair.
Two beaches below a Genoese tower just north of the village on the RT 10; the northern one has a restaurant and water sports.
A 900 metre stretch of sand about 30 minutes' walk from the southern Fautea beach on the customs path. Steep drop-offs make it a poor choice for small children.
The nearest town, about 15 km south, with Genoese walls round its old centre and Palombaggia beach about 3 km beyond.
Figari airport is about 38 km away, roughly 40 minutes by car. Buses from Figari village run via Porto-Vecchio, on the C1 then the C10, but take around two hours. Hire a car at the airport: homes here are spread between the village and the coast.
July is the driest month and August the warmest. Summer is also when Porto-Vecchio swells to around 50,000 people and its beaches, Palombaggia especially, get crowded, so a base up the coast at Sainte-Lucie helps. Pinarellu's pine grove gives shade through the hottest hours. November is the wettest month. Late spring and September miss the August peak.
Yes, largely because of Pinarellu. Its white-sand beach stays shallow a long way out, the pines give shade, and there are beach mats and a wheelchair. Many of our homes here are family-sized, and quite a few sleep eight or more.
Not quite. The village sits on the plain about 3 km inland on the RT 10. The D168A runs down to Pinarellu on the coast, and the Fautea beaches are just north of the village.
Pick Sainte-Lucie for a smaller base with its own shops and the Pinarellu and Fautea beaches. Porto-Vecchio, about 15 km south, has the walled old town and Palombaggia, but grows to around 50,000 people in summer.
Lavu Santu fits. It is a 900 metre stretch of sand reached in about 30 minutes on the coastal customs path from the southern Fautea beach. Steep underwater drop-offs mean it is not one for young children.
Driving is simplest: about 38 km, or roughly 40 minutes. Public transport means bus C1 from Figari village to Porto-Vecchio and the C10 on to Sainte-Lucie, which takes around two hours.
