Saint-Florent is a small port town on Corsica's northern coast, sometimes called the Saint-Tropez of Corsica. That's a stretch, but the yacht-filled marina, the waterfront restaurants, and the nearby desert des Agriates (a wild, undeveloped coast with some of the island's best beaches) do give it a certain appeal. The old Genoese citadel above the harbour adds historical weight, and the Patrimonio wine region starts just up the road. We think it's a good base for visitors who want boat access to the Agriates beaches combined with evening dining and a bit of life in the harbour.
Why Stay in Saint-Florent
- Agriates beaches: Plage du Lotu and Plage de Saleccia, both reached by boat from Saint-Florent (around €20-25 return), are among the finest in Corsica. White sand, turquoise water, no development.
- Harbour dining: The marina has a good selection of restaurants. Seafood is the speciality. Evening terraces overlooking the yachts are pleasant.
- Patrimonio wine: The nearest AOC wine region is 5 minutes up the valley. Several domaines offer tastings of the Nielluccio reds and Vermentinu whites.
- Small and seasonal: Saint-Florent is quiet outside June to September. Many businesses close for winter. Even in summer, it's a small town with limited non-food activities.
Things to Do in Saint-Florent
Take the boat to Lotu or Saleccia beach. Lotu is smaller and closer (15 minutes). Saleccia is larger (45 minutes) and backed by dunes. Both are reached only by boat or a rough 4x4 track. Bring everything you need: shade, water, food. Facilities are minimal.
Walk up to the citadel for views over the harbour and the Nebbio valley. The 12th-century Santa Maria Assunta cathedral (the former cathedral of the Nebbio) is on the road out of town and worth a stop for its Romanesque architecture.
Drive the Cap Corse circuit (the finger of land north of Bastia). It's about a 3-hour drive around the cape, passing through tiny fishing villages, Genoese towers, and wild coastline. Patrimonio (5 minutes) has wine tastings. Bastia (25 minutes) has a proper town centre, a citadel, and the old port.
