Vaux sur Mer suits couples and small families who want a compact resort commune on the edge of Royan, within reach of its beaches. Most homes sleep four or fewer, and about half have a garden.
Vaux-sur-Mer is a small commune of about 4,000 people covering only six square kilometres, in the Royan canton and one of the resorts of the Côte de Beauté. It runs straight into Royan, and the north-west corner of Royan's Pontaillac district actually belongs to Vaux. Pontaillac has been redeveloped since 2003 with a wooden promenade, a viewpoint and a rose garden above the beach, which is floodlit until about 2 a.m. and has a large surf club. In the town centre the Protestant temple, finished in 1848, stands below the Saint-Étienne church. Our homes are bunched close together, mostly for two to four people with one bedroom. Many have a garden, a good share have a pool and a few have air conditioning. Almost none has a fireplace, so this is more a summer base than a winter one.
The Côte de Beauté's capital, rebuilt in Modernist style after 1945, with five beaches separated by limestone cliffs and Notre-Dame church of 1958.
A residential district of Royan, partly in Vaux-sur-Mer, with a surf club and a beach used by beginners and as a fallback surf spot.
Another of the Côte de Beauté's six core seaside resorts, alongside Vaux-sur-Mer and Royan.
A private zoo in Les Mathes, open all year, in the forest of La Coubre, with more than 1,600 animals.
A ferry crosses from Royan to Le Verdon-sur-Mer in the Médoc in about 30 minutes.
Royan has no airport. The nearest are Rochefort-Saint-Agnant at 30 km, La Rochelle-Île de Ré at 70 km and Bordeaux-Mérignac at 100 km. Royan itself is 65 km from La Rochelle by road. A car is the simplest way to reach the beaches and the rest of the coast.
Summer is the season for Royan's beaches, where Pontaillac is lit until about 2 a.m. and has music from sunset to around 11:30 p.m. The beach is used mostly by beginners or as a fallback spot by surfers. Almost no homes have a fireplace, so cooler months are less suitable, though the zoo at La Palmyre stays open all year.
Yes. Vaux-sur-Mer sits in the Royan canton and runs into Royan; the north-west part of Royan's Pontaillac district belongs to Vaux. It is one of six core resorts of the Côte de Beauté.
It is a beginner or fallback spot rather than a major break. The town's surf club is based here and the floodlights, on until about 2 a.m., allow night surfing. For bigger surf, look to the Côte Sauvage beyond La Palmyre.
Many have a garden and a good share have a pool. Most are small, sleeping two to four with one bedroom, and few have a fireplace, so they suit summer holidays.
Royan has no airport. Rochefort-Saint-Agnant is about 30 km from Royan, La Rochelle-Île de Ré about 70 km and Bordeaux-Mérignac about 100 km. Bordeaux is 98 km from Royan by road.
Vaux-sur-Mer is a compact resort commune next to Royan with a town centre close at hand. Les Mathes lies up the coast on the Arvert peninsula, in a pine forest beside the Côte Sauvage and the zoo, so it is wilder.
