Villas in Ile de Ré suit cyclists and couples who want cycle paths, salt marshes and sandy beaches over the toll bridge from La Rochelle. Most homes are small, some with a private pool, but choice is limited and the island's population grows almost tenfold in summer.
Ré is a low island about 30 km long and 5 km wide, joined to the mainland near La Rochelle since 1988 by a 2.9 km toll bridge. Ten communes run along it, from Rivedoux-Plage at the bridge to Les Portes-en-Ré at the western end. Sandy beaches ring the coast, the water is cool, and a light breeze rarely drops. Cycle paths cover the island and bikes are the main way around. Saint-Martin-de-Ré, fortified by Vauban in 1681, is on the UNESCO list. Our homes are spread over a few kilometres rather than in one village; most sleep two to four, and some have a pool or sauna. Out of season around 18,000 people live here.
The historic capital, with a harbour and Vauban walls on the UNESCO list; buses from La Rochelle airport stop here.
Lanes lined with hollyhocks, a church bell tower with a view, and one of the island's biggest markets every morning.
The lighthouse has a wide view from the top, and the long Conche des Baleines beach has fine sand and lifeguards.
The mainland city at the end of the bridge; the Les Mouettes bus network links it with the whole island every day.
La Rochelle airport is about 11 miles from Saint-Martin-de-Ré, around 20 minutes by car, and bus 152 takes about 45 minutes. The bridge charges a toll and summer traffic is heavy, so many visitors switch to bikes once they arrive.
The season runs from 1 April to 30 September. In summer the population rises almost tenfold and traffic queues build at Rivedoux-Plage, so June is a good compromise between weather and crowds. The sea is cool even in high summer, and winter is quiet.
Some, yes. A share of our Ré homes have a private pool, but most are small, sleeping two to four, so larger homes with a pool are scarce and the best weeks go early.
Not really. Cycle paths cross the low island, bike hire is easy to find, and many residents rarely drive. A car helps for the far western end, but expect jams in high season.
There is. The 2.9 km bridge from La Rochelle is a toll road, described as the most expensive road per kilometre in France. Check the current rate before you travel.
Saint-Martin-de-Ré, for most people: it is the historic capital, with the harbour and UNESCO-listed Vauban walls. La Flotte has a busy harbour with terraces, and Sainte-Marie-de-Ré is known for a festive mood.
