Sulkava suits families and groups after a lakeside sauna stay, with Savonlinna about 30 minutes away by car. Its July rowing race around Partalansaari on Lake Saimaa is the big date; in winter most services close.
Sulkava is a small rural municipality of around 2,300 people, with over 180 square kilometres of its area under water. The centre has two supermarkets, a marina, some restaurants and a large 19th-century wooden church, and outside it the land is rural. The homes are spread around the municipality rather than clustered, nearly all with a sauna, usually sleeping four to eight. In July the rowing race brings thousands of rowers and spectators; otherwise evenings mean the lake, the sauna and quiet. In winter most services beyond the basics are closed.

Savonlinna Airport, about 13 km north of Savonlinna centre, has two daily flights from Helsinki. Savonlinna itself is the nearest city, about 30 minutes from Sulkava by car. Buses serve Sulkava from Savonlinna, Mikkeli-Juva and Puumala, but a car is needed to reach homes spread around the lakes.
The busiest time is the Finnish holiday season from early June to mid-August, and the rowing race is held every July. In January most services outside the necessities are closed, so this is a summer destination.
