Heinävesi is a thinly populated lake municipality in Finland, for small groups who want a sauna and Orthodox monasteries nearby. The homes are scattered across a large area, so check where each one sits before you book.
Heinävesi covers about 1,320 km², of which about 290 km² is water, and has fewer than 3,000 residents, so everything is spread out. It moved from South Savo to North Karelia in 2021. New Valamo Monastery and Lintula Holy Trinity Convent, the only Orthodox monasteries in Finland, are both here. Lintula, at Palokki, welcomes visitors and has a souvenir shop and a candle factory. Every home has a sauna, most are small, with one bedroom and room for two to four, and Wi-Fi is not standard. The homes are scattered widely across the municipality. After dark you are mostly at the home, and out of season it is very quiet.
An Orthodox monastery in Heinävesi itself; it and Lintula are the only Orthodox monasteries in Finland.

Heinävesi is small, so the nearest bigger places are Joensuu, 81 km northeast, and Savonlinna, about 105 km by road, or roughly 1 hour 40 minutes by car. Plan on a hire car, as the homes are scattered over a wide area and not on a town street.
Every home has a sauna and over half have a fireplace, so a cold-season stay works. Wi-Fi is not standard, so download maps before you arrive. Check opening times at New Valamo and the Lintula shop before an off-season visit, and expect the municipality to be very quiet.
