Sotkamo suits families who want a sauna cabin at Vuokatti, with gentle slopes and the world's first cross-country ski tunnel. Nearly every cabin has its own sauna and most have a fireplace. The trade-off is the journey: there are no direct UK flights, so you change in Helsinki for Kajaani, 40 km from Vuokatti.
Sotkamo is a municipality of almost 3,000 square kilometres with only about 10,000 people, and most of our cabins sit around Vuokatti, its biggest village and the ski resort in the west, rather than in Sotkamo village itself. A few spread out along the forest roads. The ski hill is small, with a vertical drop of 170 metres and a longest run of about 800 metres, and Max's Snow World gives younger children their own area. Several slopes on the north and west sides are lit for darker afternoons. Lake Nuasjärvi lies right by the ski centre, and Sotkamo village has a sandy beach, Hiukka, on Iso Sapsojärvi. Evenings are low key: a couple of slope restaurants such as À la Katti and Pirtti, then the sauna back at the cabin. In summer the ski tunnel still opens from early June.
Kainuu's main town, about 40 km west of Sotkamo, with the railway station and the roofless ruins of Kajaani Castle on an island between two rapids.
Inside Sotkamo municipality: a gorge about a kilometre long with cliffs up to 20 metres, reached on marked trails from the Palolampi entrance.
The neighbouring municipality, with more than 600 lakes, a long border with Russia and a chamber music festival held every year since 1970.
Finnair flies from Helsinki to Kajaani in about 1 hour 20 minutes, and the airport is 40 km from Vuokatti. Trains from Helsinki also reach Kajaani station, again 40 km away. Hire cars are available at the airport, and the local SotKatti bus links Sotkamo and Vuokatti. A car is the easier choice for outlying cabins.
The tunnel and the outdoor first snow track open on 10 October, well before the natural snow. January is usually the best month on the slopes, and February is the busiest, because Finnish schools take their winter holiday. Midwinter cold can be hard enough to cut short time outdoors for small children. In summer the tunnel keeps running from early June, and lake swimming takes over from skiing.
Yes, for families with young children especially. Vuokatti has Max's Snow World for kids, gentle slopes and group ski lessons from age four, and nearly every cabin has a sauna. Experienced teenage skiers may find the hill too small after a few days.
It helps a lot. Kajaani airport and the railway station are both 40 km from Vuokatti, and long-distance buses follow the main roads rather than stopping at cabins. The local SotKatti bus runs between Sotkamo and Vuokatti, so a stay near the slopes is possible without one.
Kajaani, 40 km from Vuokatti. Finnair flies there from Helsinki in about 1 hour 20 minutes, and there are no direct flights from the UK, so plan on a connection. Europcar has a desk at the airport.
Yes, if you want easy skiing rather than big terrain. Vuokatti has 14 slopes and 9 lifts, with several lit, plus the indoor ski tunnel for cross-country practice. February is the busiest month because of Finnish school holidays, so book early.
Choose Sotkamo for a smaller, gentler hill that suits young children, with a vertical drop of 170 metres. Levi is much bigger, with 43 pistes, a drop of 325 metres and an airport only 15 km away, so it suits stronger skiers better.
Walking the gorge trails in Hiidenportti National Park, swimming at Hiukka beach in Sotkamo village and cross-country skiing in the Vuokatti tunnel, which opens from early June. The Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival is held in the neighbouring municipality.
