Shaldon suits couples who want a Georgian riverside village opposite Teignmouth, with a ferry across the Teign. We have only a handful of small homes here, for up to four, so book early for August regatta week.
Shaldon is a village of around 1,700 people on the south bank of the Teign estuary, looking across the river mouth to Teignmouth. Much of it stands on reclaimed land behind a retaining wall from around 1800, and the streets keep their Georgian houses. The red sandstone headland of the Ness rises on this side of the river mouth. The botanical gardens, open to the public since 1955, include a folly called Shaldon Castle, and Shaldon Zoo fills an acre of woodland. Evenings are quiet; for more choice, cross to Teignmouth. Both of our homes have a garden.
The town across the estuary, reached by passenger ferry or bridge, with a river beach known as the Back Beach on the estuary side.
Brunel's railway line runs along this sea wall for several miles from Teignmouth to Dawlish Warren, right beside the water.
Exeter is about 16 miles away, roughly 25 minutes by car. Trains from Exeter St Davids reach Teignmouth in about half an hour, then the ferry or bridge takes you over, and Stagecoach bus 2 runs from Exeter.
Either on foot over Shaldon Bridge or by the passenger ferry across the river mouth. The bridge, rebuilt in steel and concrete between 1928 and 1931, is about 1,130 feet long and has been toll-free since 1948.
Each August, over nine days. It dates back to at least 1817 and is one of the oldest regattas in England.
Yes. Take the train to Teignmouth and cross by ferry or bridge, or catch Stagecoach bus 2 from Exeter, which runs every half hour and takes just over an hour.
