Combe Martin works for families after the South West Coast Path, the edge of Exmoor and the Great Hangman cliffs close by. All the homes here come with use of a pool and a fireplace. The catch is the journey: Exeter, the nearest airport, is a long transfer.
Combe Martin is a village on the North Devon coast about 4 miles east of Ilfracombe, on the north-west edge of Exmoor National Park. Its single main street runs up the narrow valley from a sheltered cove for about a mile and a half, past the Pack o' Cards, a pub built around 1700 that originally had 52 windows and 13 rooms. The South West Coast Path runs through the village and up to the Great Hangman, a hill of about 318 metres with a cliff face of around 218 metres. Disused silver mines dot the eastern ridge; their silver helped pay for the wars of Edward III and Henry V. The homes are grouped together in one spot rather than spread along the street.
Hog-backed hill of about 318 metres reached on the coast path from the village, forming the Hangman cliffs with Little Hangman.

Combe Martin attraction mixing a wildlife park, with wallabies, wolves and lions, and dinosaur models and a museum.
Exeter is the nearest airport. From Exeter itself the drive is about 50 miles and takes around 70 minutes. By rail, trains run from Exeter St Davids to Barnstaple, where bus 301 continues to Combe Martin. A car makes the coast and Exmoor far easier to reach.
The Hunting of the Earl of Rone fills the main street over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend each year, and a strawberry fayre in early June recalls the village's past as a big strawberry grower. Book early for those dates and for the school summer holidays.
That is a myth. The main street runs for about a mile and a half between the valley head and the sea, but the title belongs to Stewkley in Buckinghamshire.
About 318 metres, with a cliff face of around 218 metres. You reach it on the South West Coast Path from the village, and with Little Hangman it forms the Hangman cliffs just east of the bay.
An annual custom held over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend, ending with a two-mile procession along the main street. It was banned in 1837 and reconstructed in 1970.
Yes, though slowly. Take the train from Exeter St Davids to Barnstaple, then bus 301 to the village; the whole trip from Exeter takes around three hours.
