Malling gives families a quiet village base 12 km south of Aarhus, with the city's museums a tram ride away. Malling itself lies about 5 km from the sea, and the homes are outside the village, so check each listing's map before counting on a walk to the beach.
Malling is a railway town of a little over 6,000 people, grown almost into neighbouring Beder so that the pair are often called Beder-Malling. Hills, farmland, woods and meadows surround it. Its main sight is Malling Church, a fortified medieval church where sections of the old walls can still be seen, one of four known in East Jutland. The railway arrived in 1884, and Malling Kro, established that year, still serves dinner on Stationspladsen with the light rail right outside. The homes are outside the village, and most sleep four. Evenings mean the inn or the tram into Aarhus.
A prism-shaped building on a grassy hill near the coast south of Aarhus, home to the Grauballe Man bog body and the weapon sacrifice from Illerup Ådal.
A white sandy beach about a kilometre long in the Marselisborg Forests on Aarhus's southern edge, sheltered by steep wooded slopes.
ARoS art museum, with its rooftop walkway of rainbow-coloured glass, and Den Gamle By, an open-air museum of old Danish buildings.
Aarhus Airport is about 45 minutes from Aarhus by airport bus, and Billund about 90 minutes. Malling is 12 km south of Aarhus, linked by tram line L2 in around 34 minutes or bus 100 in about half an hour. A car is handiest for beaches and the homes.
Summer suits the beaches south of Aarhus, and each July a large Viking event with markets and re-enactments is held on Moesgård Beach. Outside summer, Malling is a quiet place to sleep between museum days in Aarhus.
Take the tram. Line L2 runs from Malling to Dokk1 in central Aarhus in around 34 minutes, and bus 100 takes about half an hour. By car, Aarhus is roughly 12 km north.
Its defences. Malling Church is a fortified medieval church, and parts of the old walls can still be seen. It is one of four known fortified churches in East Jutland and the only one to have been excavated, in 1943 and 1944.
Fairly near. Malling village lies about 5 km from the sea, and the homes are outside the village, so check each listing's map. Moesgård Beach, white sand under wooded slopes on the southern edge of Aarhus, makes an easy beach day from Malling.
As a base, yes, if you want city days too. The homes are mostly small, children can spend a day at Moesgaard Museum and another at Den Gamle By, and the tram makes Aarhus easy without parking.
