About Augustenborg
Augustenborg grew around its palace, begun in the years after 1651 by Ernest Günther and named after his wife Auguste. Around 3,100 people live here, at the head of Als Fjord with the Little Belt to the east. The palace buildings are closed to visitors apart from the palace church, which has special opening hours, and a small museum by the bell tower covers the ducal family. In the park, the remains of a linden tree once shaded H. C. Andersen. Als is a fertile island, once known for its fruit orchards. Nearly all homes have a fireplace, and none has a pool.
