Østermarie is a Bornholm village 8 km west of Svaneke, best for larger groups who want room more than a seafront. Most homes here sleep eight or more. Gudhjem is about 15 minutes away by car, but you will drive to every harbour and beach, and pools are not a feature here.
Østermarie is a village of about 450 people that only grew up around 1880, first under the name Godthåb. It became Østermarie when the railway station opened in 1916; buses replaced the trains in 1952. The parish is the largest on Bornholm by area. The centre has two churches together: the ruin of the old Romanesque church, maintained by the National Museum of Denmark, and the new church of 1891, its outer wall in granite from the nearby Paradis quarry. Runestones found in the ruin now stand in the churchyard and between the two churches. Its shops help explain why the population has held fairly steady while many rural villages have shrunk. The homes are scattered around Østermarie, and some have a fireplace.
8 km east of Østermarie, known for its well-preserved half-timbered houses and mansions along the harbour.
About a 15-minute drive from Østermarie, with steep streets running down to its fishing harbour.
Fly from Copenhagen to Rønne, about 40 minutes, or drive to Ystad in Sweden and take the car ferry to Rønne. Rønne is the island's only town with an airport and major ferry harbour, and every bus route starts there. Hire a car for touring the island from Østermarie.
The old Romanesque church lost its tower in 1885 and was being pulled down until work stopped in 1890 because of its architectural interest. The new church went up in 1891 where the old tower stood, so the ruin and its replacement share the site.
Several. Stones carved between about 1075 and 1125 were found reused as building material in the old church ruin. Some now stand in the churchyard or between the two churches.
Svaneke is 8 km east and Gudhjem about a 15-minute drive, so both harbour towns make easy trips. Østermarie itself is a quiet village, so plan on driving most evenings.
Mostly, yes. The majority of homes here sleep eight or more and some have a fireplace, but pools are not a feature. Check each listing for beds and layout.
