Central Protaras around Fig Tree Bay suits families who want beaches and tavernas close by; Pernera and Kapparis, in Paralimni, are quieter with their own coves; Ayia Napa suits groups who want Nissi Beach and nightlife. Where to stay in Protaras

Central Protaras and Fig Tree Bay

This is where most of our villas in the area are. Fig Tree Bay is the best-known beach, with golden sand, clear shallow water and a promenade of cafés and restaurants. Vrysi beach, a sandy stretch of around a kilometre, is close by. Larnaca airport is around an hour's drive, and the airport shuttle bus stops on Protaras Avenue.

Best for: Families who want sandy beaches and restaurants within easy reach

Not for you if: You want somewhere quiet and traditional: this is a busy, purpose-built resort in summer.

Pernera and Kapparis (north, Paralimni)

North of central Protaras, Pernera has a shallow, golden-sand beach linked to the centre by a seafront path, and Louma beach nearby has a small chapel. Kapparis, around five to ten minutes' drive further north, is more residential, with a small sandy beach and coastal walking paths. The town of Paralimni is just inland for shops and everyday restaurants.

Best for: Families who want sandy coves with a calmer feel

Not for you if: You want to walk to Fig Tree Bay every day: from Kapparis it is a short drive rather than a stroll.

Konnos Bay and Cape Greko (between Protaras and Ayia Napa)

South of Protaras, the coast turns to cliffs, sea caves and the Cape Greko National Forest Park, a protected area with walking trails and dive spots. Konnos Bay, a small sandy cove backed by pines, sits on its edge and gets busy in summer. Villas on the slopes between Protaras and Ayia Napa put both resorts within a short drive.

Best for: Walkers, snorkellers and couples who want scenery

Not for you if: You want a lot of villas to choose from: the protected headland has little development.

Ayia Napa

Ayia Napa is the larger, livelier neighbour, with a busy bar and club scene in summer. It also has some of the island's best-known beaches: Nissi Beach, with pale sand and a small islet, Makronissos and Landa. Villas on the outskirts give you the beaches without being in the middle of the noise. Larnaca airport is around 40 to 50 minutes away.

Best for: Groups and older teens who want famous beaches and nightlife

Not for you if: You want quiet evenings in July and August: the town centre is loud late into the night.

When to go to Protaras

The season is long. May, June, September and October are the best months for most families, with warm sea and sunshine but less heat. July and August are very hot and the busiest time, especially in Ayia Napa, so plan beach days for the morning and late afternoon. Winter is mild and quiet, and good value, but the sea is cool and many resort bars, restaurants and beach businesses close or cut back their hours over the winter.
