Korčula suits couples and solo travellers after a walled old town and island wine, with a garden at nearly every home. The shuttle from Dubrovnik airport takes about two and a half hours. Few homes have a pool.
Korčula is a town on the east coast of the island of the same name, tightly built on a promontory. The old town is walled, with streets laid out in a herringbone pattern that lets air through while shielding it from strong winds, and St Mark's Cathedral stands at its highest point. Seven of its twelve medieval towers still stand. The moreška, a medieval weapon dance, is performed for visitors twice a week. The homes lie around the town rather than inside the walls, are mostly small for two to four, and nearly all have a garden. Pine forest covers much of the island.
Coastal village at the eastern end of the island's main road, where the Lumbarda Psephisma, Croatia's oldest written stone monument, was found.
Town on the Pelješac peninsula, reached by a ferry of about 15 minutes from Dominče, just outside Korčula town.
Main settlement at the western end of the island, with ferries to Split and Lastovo.
Dubrovnik airport is linked to Korčula by a shuttle bus of about two and a half hours, or you can take a ferry to Dubrovnik and a bus on to the airport. A ferry also crosses to Orebić on Pelješac. Having a car on the island helps.
