Blato suits families and friends who want a house with a garden in the farming west of Korčula, with the sea on both coasts. The homes are spread out around the municipality rather than in town. It is a long trip from any airport, and a car is essential.
Blato is a working town of around 3,300 people on hills around a small valley in western Korčula, with a long avenue of linden trees, the Zlinje, running through it and a park that gives deep shade in summer. The neighbouring field that gave the town its name flooded regularly until 1911, and olive oil, wine, carob and figs remain the region's main products. The municipality reaches the sea on both sides of the island, and our homes are scattered across it rather than grouped in town. Hotels and private rentals in the small coastal places of Prižba and Prigradica have driven tourism here, so evenings in town are low-key.
Former fishing village on Korčula's southern coast, made up of small bays and two peninsulas, with a small pebble beach at Priscapac.
Small harbour about 3 km north of Blato, once the town's main port and now one of its holiday spots.
Village that grew up around fertile fields at the far west end of the island, with remains of stone fortresses built by the Illyrians.
Town neighbouring Potirna and the island's ferry link with Split, with direct sailings taking around three hours.
From the UK, travel to Split and take the ferry to Vela Luka, which takes around three hours direct or slightly less via Hvar. Blato is about 40 km from Korčula town along the main island road, so you will need a car to get around.
Come in late April if you can: the Kumpanija sword dance is performed on 28 April, the feast of St Vincenca, Blato's patron saint. For swimming, aim for summer at the coastal spots of Prižba and Prigradica, where Blato's hotels and private rentals are.
On the coast of the municipality, not in town. Blato's land touches the sea on both sides of the island, with holiday spots at Prižba on the south coast and Prigradica, Blato's old port, to the north.
By ferry to Vela Luka, around three hours on the direct sailing, then by road. Blato is a working town rather than a port, so plan on having a car on the island.
On 28 April, the feast of St Vincenca, the town's patron saint. The Kumpanija is the dance Blato is best known for.
For the west of the island, yes. Korčula town is about 40 km along the main road, so day trips east take some driving, but Vela Luka and the bays near Blato are close.
