Labin is a hilltop town on Istria's eastern coast, about 40 km northeast of Pula. It sits 320 metres above the Adriatic with views across Kvarner Bay to the island of Cres. The old town has been reinvented as an artists' quarter, with galleries, studios, and workshops in the medieval lanes. Below the hill, the seaside resort of Rabac offers beaches and swimming. Together they make a practical pair: culture and character on the hill, sand and sea at the bottom. We think it's one of the more underrated bases in Istria.
Why Stay in Labin
- Hilltop old town — medieval lanes with Venetian-era architecture, now occupied by artists' studios and galleries. The cultural scene is modest but genuine.
- Rabac beaches below — the seaside resort has several pebbly beaches with clear water and beach bars. It's a 10-minute drive (or a steep walk) from Labin's hilltop.
- Mining heritage, Labin was a coal mining town until the 1990s. The mining museum in the old town and the tunnels below add an unexpected layer of history.
- Honest caveat. the steep hill between Labin old town and Rabac beach means you'll drive rather than walk. Rabac itself is a standard resort with some concrete hotels from the Yugoslav era. The eastern Istrian coast has fewer attractions than the western side.
Things to Do in Labin
Walk the old town and visit the artist studios. The Labin Art Republic project has turned former shops and houses into galleries and workshops. The Town Museum (Narodni Muzej) covers local history from prehistoric times through the mining era, including a recreated mine tunnel you can walk through.
Drive down to Rabac for the beach. Girandella beach is the largest, with pebbly sand, clear water, and a beach bar. Smaller coves along the coast are reachable by foot or boat. The water here is clean and good for snorkelling.
From Labin's main square, the views across Kvarner Bay take in the islands of Cres and Lošinj. The sunsets from the town terrace are reliable and impressive. A couple of cafés with terrace seating make the most of the position.
For day trips, drive south to Pula (40 minutes) for the Arena and Roman ruins, or north to Opatija (45 minutes) for its Habsburg-era waterfront. The Učka Nature Park, the mountain range behind Labin, has hiking trails and the Poklon pass viewpoint.
