Slatine is a village on Čiovo's north-east coast with a small summer ferry to Split and Trogir about 8 km away by road. The beach is long, but shops and Trogir's old town are a bus ride or drive away.
Slatine is a small fishing and tourist village of under a thousand residents on the north-east side of Čiovo, facing Split and the Marjan peninsula across Kaštela bay. Čiovo covers about 29 square kilometres and has been joined to Trogir by a bridge since 1964. The village has a long beach and numerous restaurants and beach bars, which give it a following among locals for nightlife. Our homes are close together around the village. Nearly all have air conditioning and more than half a garden, while a pool is less common, and some sleep eight or more. Out of season the summer ferry stops, so check which places stay open.
About 8 km by road, with a UNESCO old town on a small islet linked by bridges; a bus runs from Slatine.
About 30 minutes by Bura Line ferry from Slatine in summer, or about 36 minutes and 33 km by car.
The municipality on the western side of Čiovo, known for its numerous pebble beaches and sports facilities.
A 15th-century fortress in Trogir's historic core, which also holds the 13th-century Cathedral of St Lawrence.
Split airport is about 6 km from Trogir, so Slatine is a short drive from it. Heathrow has non-stop flights to Split with British Airways and Croatia Airlines. A car helps, though a bus links Slatine and Trogir, and in summer a ferry runs to Split four times a day.
Summer is when the small ferry to Split runs and when the bridges are busiest. A new bascule bridge opened in 2018 because tourist traffic had caused severe capacity shortages in high season. Spring and autumn are quieter on the long beach. The northern side of Čiovo is exposed to the bora, and annual rainfall is about 900 mm.
Yes, in summer. Bura Line runs a small ferry from Slatine to the Port of Split, four times a day with a crossing of about 30 minutes. It operates in the summer months only, so check dates before relying on it.
Trogir is about 8 km from Slatine by road, and a bus line connects the two. The old town sits on a small islet between the mainland and Čiovo, joined to both sides by bridges.
It works for families who want a long beach and restaurants within the village, with homes close together. The drawback is that Trogir and its shops are about 8 km away, a drive or bus ride rather than a walk.
Split airport, about 6 km from Trogir, is the nearest. British Airways and Croatia Airlines fly non-stop from London Heathrow, with flight times listed at about 2 hours 25 minutes to 2 hours 55 minutes.
Choose Slatine for a beach village on Čiovo with a ferry to Split; choose Trogir to be beside the UNESCO old town, listed by UNESCO since 1997. Slatine is about 8 km from Trogir by road.
