Šibenik suits groups who want a stone old town and the Krka waterfalls close by, with a pool and air conditioning in many homes. The homes are scattered around the town rather than in it, so a car is needed.
Šibenik is a town of about 31,000 people where the Krka river flows into the Adriatic. The Cathedral of St James, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built entirely of stone, without mortar or wood, between 1431 and 1536, rises over the orange rooftops of the old town. Four fortresses look out over the city, the sea and the nearby islands, with St John's at 115 metres above the old town and St Nicholas on the island of Ljuljevac at the entrance to the St Anthony Channel. Our homes are spread widely around the town, so few are close to the centre. Many have a pool and nearly all have air conditioning. The city beaches are never empty in summer.
Waterfalls and cultural monuments roughly 18 km north of Šibenik, with Skradinski buk the largest in the park.
A UNESCO-listed Venetian fortress on the island of Ljuljevac, at the entrance to the St Anthony Channel.
About 80 km southeast along the Adriatic Highway, a possible day out and the nearer airport.
About 79 km northwest by the same highway, with its own airport about 70 km from Šibenik.
Šibenik has no airport. Split airport is about 50 km away and Zadar airport about 70 km, so most visitors fly to one of them and drive the Adriatic Highway. You need a car for the scattered homes and for Krka.
Summers are hot and dry, and the city beaches are never empty, so book early for July and August. Winters are mild and humid. The International Children's Festival, with workshops, plays and other activities for children, takes place in town every summer.
Yes. Krka National Park lies roughly 18 km north of the city, and its largest waterfall is Skradinski buk. The park also holds cultural and historical monuments as well as its falls.
For Krka and old stone streets, it is. Šibenik has a cathedral on the UNESCO list and Krka about 18 km north, while Split is about 80 km away by the Adriatic Highway, so Split's sights are a full day out from here.
Split, about 50 km away, or Zadar, about 70 km. Šibenik has no airport of its own, so either way you finish the trip by road along the coast.
Some, and they get busy. The city beaches are never empty in summer, and Banj beach looks across to the St Anthony Channel. Homes are spread widely around the town, so check the distance to the water.
Quite a lot do. Many have a pool and nearly all have air conditioning, which helps in the hot, dry summers. Some also have a garden.
