Omiš suits active families who want the Cetina river mouth, two old fortresses and rafting trips, with Split about 25 km away. The homes are scattered along the coast around the town rather than clustered in it, so check each position.
Omiš is a small port town where the Cetina river meets the Adriatic, once the base of the Omiški gusari, corsairs whose ships were built to attack and then slip back into the river mouth. Two fortresses survive, Mirabella from the 13th century and Starigrad from the 15th. Our homes spread over a fair distance, so some sit near the town and others in surrounding villages such as Stanići and Duće. Most are houses and apartments for around five, a good number with a garden and about a third with a pool. Summer brings the Festival of Dalmatian Klapas, with concerts and recitals in the squares and churches. Out of season this is a municipality of about fourteen thousand people going about ordinary life.
Croatia's second largest city, about 25 km north-west, reached by line 60 buses every half hour.
Boat trips up the river canyon take around an hour to an hour and a half; touts on the main road bridge sell them.
The canyoning base, about 30 km from Omiš.
Town worth visiting, with taxi-van services running from both Split and Makarska.
Islands with several local boats a day to Split, and ferry trips to both are offered.
Fly to Split airport, about 19 km from Split on the west side of Kaštela Bay, then continue to Omiš, about 25 km south-east of Split. Line 60 buses from Split's Sukoišanska terminal run about every 30 minutes, but with homes spread around the area a hire car is far easier.
July and August are the hottest months in nearby Split, and the sea there is warmest in August. Summer is also when the klapa festival, Fishing Nights and Pirates Nights run. November is the wettest month in Split, and winter days are cool, so the off season is quiet and best for walking rather than swimming.
Yes, if your family likes activity over lounging. Rafting on the Cetina and boat trips up the canyon are on offer, and canyoning runs from Zadvarje. Many homes here have a garden, and about a third have a pool.
Guides list the town beach, Velika Plaža, without saying whether it is sand or pebble. Check photos for your own stretch of coast, as homes are spread around the area rather than in the town.
